Designer / Educator
Mathew Chester Pow (b.1990, Singapore) is a Singapore-based educator, designer, creator, and visionary. His user-centric designs create complex experiences for his users while embodying sophisticated minimalist forms unlike others in the world today. As a creator, he is fascinated by all steps of the design process, from the research phase to the tangible realization of his vision. It is the joy of trial and error, discovering new questions along the way, and anticipating the needs of speculative futures that drives Mathew. This culminates in a multifaceted experience for each user of his products that goes beyond a purely visual or aesthetic impact.
Mathew began pursuing a career in research and design studies at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where he received a diploma in 3D Design: Object Design. This was followed by achieving his Bachelor’s degree in 3D Design with a speciality in New Practice from Loughborough University, where he graduated with upper second class honours. Armed with the skills and knowledge from his academic studies, he began his career as a product designer at Coast Cycles (CC). Here, he oversaw the implementation of hands-on design with an emphasis on promoting sustainability. During this time with CC, he built a foundation of design skills including product design and graphic design, digital content creation, and, what would become his passion, visual communication. His growing skills and enthusiasm for design led him to gain the role of Art Director. In this new role, not only was he able to engage with the design process from conceptualization through to the final product, he was able to inspire other young designers as they built their skills and enthusiasm for their craft.
He has been the recipient of awards including the Red Dot Design Award, IF Product Design Award, and a two-time winner of the TPC D&I Awards Gold as well as successfully raising $165,506 (SGD) in 2019 through his crowdfunding campaign Indiegogo. Mathew is currently an educator at Nanyang Polytechnic, inspiring and working alongside future generations of designers.
